You can waste hours keeping track of your competitors’ activities but it can be done without any activity from your end and let Google do the job for you. Google indexes pages on internet and provides a very nice feature – Google Alerts where you get email updates of the latest relevant Google results as they happen.
Let us take a very simple example. I want to know who all are saying what about my site Go4Expert and so I create a Google alert for the following terms
Go4Expert -site:www.go4expert.com
Anybody mentioning my website name Go4Expert apart from my own site and the alert will be triggered. This way any website, blog or forum on the internet when they mention my site I am notified.
I prefer to have the frequency of email to as it happens but you can also opt for once a day or even once a week.
The disadvantage of these alerts is you can do the same for your competitor’s name as well. 🙂 All you have to do is create a Google alert for your competitors name instead of yours.
