I am asked every week via emails, conversation and Instant Messaging chats to define few of the Jargon’s and so I thought let’s define complete list of blog terms for reference.
– A –
- Above the fold
- Content that becomes visible without scrolling the window. This terminology is taken from newspapers.
- Avg. CPC
- CPC or Cost per click is the suggested amount advertiser is willing to pay for each click on his advertisements. The actual cost per click averaged over different criteria is called Average Cost per Click.
– B –
- Blog
- A blog is a type of website, usually (but not always) maintained by an individual with entries in reverse chronological order i.e. Latest “entries” at the top.
- Blogger
- A person who maintains a blog.
- Blogosphere
- The community of blogs worldwide, taken as whole
- Blogroll
- Ideally this is recommendations by a blogger of other blogs but these days its taken as recommendations by a blogger of other sites or partners.
- Blogspot
- Free blog hosting service operated by Blogger.com (Google)
- Bounce Rate
- Bounce rate is the percentage of total visitors to a site who “bounce” away to a different site rather than continue on to other pages within the same site. The formula for Bounce Rate is = Total Visitors Viewing One Page / Total Number of Visitors

- CAPTCHA
- CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.
- CMS
- CMS or content management system is a web application designed to store, manage, and format web pages.
- CPA
- CPA or Cost Per Action is the amount advertiser pays for the action generated from a website which is usually (but not always) a purchase.
- CPC
- CPC or Cost per click is the suggested amount advertiser is willing to pay for each click on his advertisements.

- CPL
- CPL or Cost per Lead is the amount advertiser is willing to pay for each lead generated from a website. Lead varies greatly. It can be as simple as sign-up with an email to a more complex detailed profile creation.
- CPM
- CPM or Cost per Impressions (M is the Roman numeral for 1,000) is the amount advertiser is willing to pay for each display of his advertisements.
- CTR
- CTR or Click Through Rate is expressed in percentage which is a metrics to track users click on an ad. This is calculated by dividing the total number of clicks by the total number of ad views.

- eCPM
- eCPM or Effective CPM, is metrics for determining the effective cost per 1000 impressions.
– F –
- Feed
- Feeds also knows as RSS or Really Simple Syndication is a standardized format to publish blog entries, news headlines, audio, video.
- Forum
- An online discussion site where users can discuss on different topics and areas. Also knowns as bulletin board or message board.
– H –
- HITs
- An HTML page has many graphical elements nowadays. When you go to that page, you’re requesting many files: the HTML file and the graphical files. All those file requests are called “hits”
– I –
- Impressions
- A complete HTML page request is typically called either an “impression” or a “pageview”
– N –
- NoFollow
- An HTML attribute introduced by Search Engine which can instruct the search engine bots from following that particular link or web page.
– P –
- PageRank
- In very simple terms its a method for measuring page importance or relevance which ranges from 0 to 10, 10 being the best. PageRank is Google patented.
- Pages/Visit
- Average Number of pages a user views in each visits
- Pageview
- A complete HTML page request is typically called either an “impression” or a “pageview”
- Permalink
- Permalink, or permanent link, is a URL to a specific post in a blog or forum archives.
- Photoblog
- A blog that primarily consists of photos.
- Ping
- Ping is system that notifies the original blogger when someone else links an entry concerning the original post.
- Plugin
- Plugins are additional programs which easily integrates into the current software and enhances the power of the software.
- PPC (Pay Per Click)

- Reciprocal Link
- I link to your website and in return you link to mine
- ROI
- ROI or Return on investment is expressed as percentage or ratio to evaluate the efficiency of an investment.
- RSS
- RSS or Really Simple Syndication is a standardized format to publish blog entries, news headlines, audio, video …

- SEM (Search Engine Marketing)
- SEM or Search Engine Marketing is the process to promote product or service through search engines.
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of optimizing an HTML page such that it gets better rankings in search engines.
– T –
- Tag
- Tag is a non-hierarchical keyword or term assigned to posts.
- Tag Cloud
- Collection of tags where the most popular tags are normally highlighted with larger fonts. It is also termed as weighted list.
- Themes or Styles
- Is a preset package containing graphical appearance details, which customizes the look and feel of the software.
- Trackback
- A protocol that notifies the original blogger when someone else links an entry concerning the original post.

- Unique Visitors
- The number of individuals who visit a particular website during a specific timespan
– V –
- Visitors
- The number of individuals who visit a particular website.
– W –
- WordPress
- A semantic open source publishing platform as well as Free blog hosting service operated at wordpress.com
