My Real Traffic Secret : Usage Rather Than Users

Today I will tell you my real traffic secret I use for Go4Expert.com. This real secret has worked so well for me that Go4Expert.com now gets millions of page views per month. It is very simple yet it is one of the best methods for generating traffic to your website. It is so simple that many webmasters hardly concentrate on this.

So what it is?

You should not have a product or website which can get users (user count) to your website but you should focus more on things where you can make your product or service usage i.e. your user loves to use it more and more.

Let us understand this with an example.

The idea behind Go4Expert.com in 2004 (When I started) was to share my articles and programs online. After starting Go4Expert.com I saw people had many questions which they wanted to ask as well. It was not related to the articles or code in the articles but more related to programming.

I converted Go4Expert.com to a forum

When we had forum I realized that people contributed in forum lots of quality articles and content.

I made the articles open to all and anybody and everybody can write articles.

I am not an expert when it comes to many area but user asked to have forums which they will be more than happy to moderate.

I made the forums for them. The latest example is the CMS Forum suggestion by hanleyhansen

When I analyzed the traffic I knew I had high bounce rate and so this means people get what they are looking for and move away from the website.

I started various Member Competitions, Monthly Article Competition as well as Daily Competition where people can interact and compete within the community.

I knew that users of Go4Expert.com are tech savvy and so there are chances that they have personal website or blog.

Created an image based profile which people can link to.

Started profile badges which is displayed near the post of the user indicating the contribution level to the community. Both made people to participate more in forums.

I also started many things like Supporting Open Source as a corporate social responsibility which is taken very well by forum members.

So identify what works – no matter in what quantity and Do it Again… and Again… Improving each time.
