Choose the right Keywords
You can provide keywords for your profile and make sure you provide the ones which you know the best. Just having them for the sake of filling would not help you much. If you are an expert in Joomla put only Joomla rather than a CMS Expert.
Respect the Feedback
Elance has a nice system to email Buyer when the project is complete and ask for a review for the user and so it means you tend to get reviews for majority of projects and so try to keep them positive as much as you can. If some does not work as you expected respect it and try to improve yourself.
Hourly Rate
If you are new in Elance you do not have feedbacks for new clients to read and so your unique selling point should be lesser hourly rate but remember it should be realistic. You would not create a complete mail system like Yahoo in $1000. That would not look realistic.
Tested Skills
