I use NoScript FireFox Plugin where I can selectively allow script from certain domain and today browsing CodeItWell.com I see a new JavaScript getting called – VigLink. VigLink is used by me on my MBA Forum where it can automatically convert outbound links into affiliates links giving you extra revenue without any change in user experience or outbound link. You have to just paste a simple JavaScript code and rest is all taken care by VigLink.
I am still running VigLink on trial mode at MBAGuys.net and suddenly I saw it on CodeItWell.com. I was confused to see VigLink Script running and thought it was done in error by me. As expected I could not find the VigLink script on my blog. So the next step for me to find the script was to check for plugins. I have quite a few plugins installed and after digging deeper found that it was lijit search which has partnered with VigLink and I quote
… we have partnered with Viglink to provide you with this data right inside your Lijit stats dashboard. They are providing Lijit publishers with this valuable information and offering an interesting opportunity as well.
Why I removed lijit?
- I expect a direct announcement in my inbox – Lijit, emails me my weekly stat updates and got one today as well and so I expected this to be in my inbox before it is live.
- I should have the power to opt in/opt out - If I am not willing to use VigLink on my site there is no way I can do that in lijit.
So Lijit search is history on CodeItWell.com now and I see the same for many other bloggers as well.
Twitter is full of such tweets currently.
Do share your views on the same.
Update : Just few hours after this post I got and email from lijit. Here is what It said.
Late last week Lijit released a new feature that helps publishers understand how readers leave their site. This feature reports in your publisher dashboard the egress links that readers are clicking on your site. This feature is powered by a partner VigLink that helps publishers optimize their affiliate links. The service we integrated did not use the monetization component of the Viglink product rather just the analytics components. It was our plan to offer the monetization component later as an opt-in service for our publishers.
By default we turned the analytics feature on for all publishers. Since that time we have received some concern from some in the publisher base that this feature was not adequately communicated ahead of time. After considering this input we decided to turn off this new feature and bring it back as an opt-in feature in the near future. This feature was turned off this morning at 9:00am MST.
If you are interested in knowing your top outbound links, please send us a note at feedback@lijit.com and we would be happy to turn the stat on.
As always our first concern is supplying a quality product to our publisher base. We take all comments and concerns extremely seriously. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.
