You have a great email readership of your blog. Now how do you keep people on the email list after they’ve opted in without unsubscribing? There should be elements which should entice your subscriber not to unsubscribe and some of them which I use are
Users perspective
I myself have subscribed to many newsletters like codeproject, sitepoint, BBC news … and have never opted out for quite sometime now. I am an active subscriber not because I was forced to subscribe but wanted to subscribe and this can be one way of keeping your subscriber list grow all the time. If they have opted in and subscribe of their own free will, there are less chances of them unsubscribing.
Quality of content
You must offer something really useful and unique in each email you send. They have subscribed to your site with an intent and if you don’t want people to unsubscribe, fulfil that intent of your user with good quality content.
Less is more
If you send too many emails, people won’t want to stay on your list. Only send e-mails once in a while or when user expects it from you and make the email enticing and you can have a active subscriber reader for life.
Clean List
If you are using services like Aweber you can be rest assured that your email list is always clean but if you are not using them then a clean email database is an absolute must. Get rid of old addresses that are not valid anymore.
If you follow the above rules there can be less chance of people opting out but some people change their minds and so you can have a feedback form or some sort of comments on the unsubscribe page if you want to track the reason for unsubscribing and this could help make your list better.
But if you are not planning to subscribe through Email. Try subscribing to RSS.
