Domain names and web hosting are very important aspect of web designing. A domain name can change the way your web presence is being addressed. There are chances a website can be loaded with traffic just by proper domain name. But choosing a domain name is not very easy. However, this article will help you through the steps of how you can choose a domain name for you or your organization. It will act as a guide for you to get your next domain online.
-
The best choice of a domain name
-
Keep it simple
-
Generic name or a specific name?
-
A long domain name or a short one?
-
Should you choose a hyphenated domain name?
-
.com or net or .info or .us or…?
It is a good idea to name a domain name that perfectly matches your company name. People who know your company will naturally type the name of your company in the address bar. It is also easier for them to remember. They’ll clearly have an idea where to go.
Don’t keep it too complicated for people to recollect. Nobody will sit to memorize your domain name except your competitors. If the domain name that you wish to buy is already sold out, don’t plan to settle with some name that is available. There is an option where you can get the owner details from “whois” and approach the owner asking if you can by the domain. Be prepared; this might cost you a lot. There are a lot of people who do it the other way round where you buy the domain name first and then name the site accordingly.
There is always confusion in the minds of people if they should go about choosing a generic name or a specific name. This totally depends on what your business is all about. It is not necessary that the domain name strictly has to be generic but it should at least hold the brand name. The name that you use to advertise your product can be a good option as well. At a very few places, the name of the founder can also be selected as the domain name if he is a known figure in the market.
There is confusion again where the people debate if they should go about choosing a long or a short name. The length of a domain name can go up to 67 characters. Yet again, it depends on the choice of the owners. There might be a long name that the company would’ve gained reputation through that name. It makes no sense if the abbreviation of that long name being the domain name- it rather be long where the people can understand. It is true to an extent that the long domain names which contains the name of your business helps in Search Engine Optimization.
There are both pros and cons when choosing a hyphenated domain name. It is not a common practice where people type in the correct hyphens when go to your website. There is a high possibility of errors to happen. But when it comes to SEO, it may be a good idea since the search engines have better chances of crawling and understanding your website.
The most common question that arises in the minds of people when it comes to choosing a domain name is this; .com or .net or .org or which one should I choose? It is a tough question to answer. But to answer this question to an extent, I can tell you that this again depends upon your business domain. If your site focuses on ecommerce and business it can be .com, if your site is for an organization it can be .org or if your target audience is just from a particular nation domains such as .in, .uk, .us can help.
Though there may still be a lot more, these are the basic criteria you should consider before choosing a domain name.

I want to add that it is better to try for .com or .net because that tells Google that the site is global in nature and it gets featured in Google.com, giving you a lot of global audience. If you go for a country specific domain like .in, your site might feature in the first page of Google.co.in, but for the same search query it will be way down in Google.com. However if you are only targetting local audience then country specific domain should be fine.
Great and helpful tips. .com is always a first choice for me. But almost all good generic names on .com are already taken today. Thus we go to the other TLDs. In my case, I use our country TLD to promote my country and my people.
Same here. I prefer .in nowadays more.
