What is Keyword Winner?

Keyword Winner is a paid WordPress plugin when installed on a WordPress blog, can help you do Keyword Research WordPress admin area and help you analyze the competition for the keywords and the number of backlinks you need to rank well for those phrases. It also helps with keyword suggestions to fine tune keyword research and find the ultimate title for posts that can rank well in Google and generate more traffic.

Though I mainly use the keyword research functionality of Keyword Winner, it does have other modules like rank tracking for posts and how you are doing in search engines.

One thing you may notice – everything is red in IMTips and the main reason for it is – You would hardly find keywords that is low on competition but then you can use Keyword Winner to find titles that can rank you well even when the competition is fierce like I do.

How I use Keyword Winner?

From time to time I visit my blog posts that gets some traffic and optimize them further to generate more traffic. When I re-visit my old posts my main focus is on the headlines because having a good headline is critical to getting people to read your blog post after they see the headline in Google.

Let me show you an example where I am generating 10 times more traffic to one of my post just because of simple change in title.

I purchased Keyword Winner few months’ back and have started using it on my blogs but this actually means I don’t have optimized titles for my old archived posts. From time to time I visit my blog archive to find posts that get some traffic and edit the post to optimize the title further so I can generate more traffic.

Normally I edit posts title and so cannot show you exact stats before and after the edit because I don’t keep track of date and time of change but for one post I thought of not changing the title but making a fresh new post because old post needed improvements on some points. Looking at the stats I was shocked and I am sure you will also experience the same shock now. So be prepared.

What does Red / Green, Yellow Color mean?

Red color means high competitive term, yellow means moderate competition and green means low competition. The number of pages competing for the term determines competition. Green means less than 100,000, Yellow means 100,000 to 10,00,000 and red means above 10,00,000

Isn’t this contradicting to the theory – Write for humans and not for search engines?

Doing a keyword research does mean you are looking for terms that people are searching but are not getting what they are looking for and rank for those terms. So do keyword research for getting more readers (humans) to site.

What not to expect in Keyword Winner

1. Keyword Winner is not a complete keyword research tool. It is just a handy tool inside WordPress admin area and can be used to find titles for posts. For complete Keyword research you can use tools like MarketSamurai (How I use it here). As keyword winner is not a complete keyword research tool you cannot use it to find keywords targeted by competitors and other such complex SEO operations.
2. Keyword Winner shows backlinks needed for a page to rank. Taking that number too seriously will not help and so make sure you only use that number for comparing two terms in keyword winner interface and nothing more than that.

The best thing I like about Keyword Winner is, it just sits in WordPress admin area and helps you get the keyword ideas as and when you are writing a post, so you don’t need to pull out applications to know the basic information like competition and search trend about a keyword that just hit your mind in the middle of writing a blog post.

Choosing a keyword is the most important weapon to bring traffic to your site and Keyword Winner just helps you get that done easily without any hassle and inside your WordPress admin interface.

Few months back I experimented with ibibo ads on my MBA Forum. I got an email from them today that reminded me of the experiment and so here I am with yet another review of Indian ad network – ibibo ads.

Positives

Accepts Indian Traffic

There are very few ad networks that accept sites that have major Indian traffic but ibibo ads being Indian ad network they accept Indian traffic.

100% Paid Ads

When they don’t have any ads to fill, they fill in house ads that are paid on cost per lead or CPL basis.

Negatives

Uses OpenX

They manage their publishers and advertisers through OpenX self hosted ad platform which is very basic ad management software and don’t offer advance ad targeting options like Interest based which means they do not offer such options to their advertisers. I assume OpenX does not offer these because OpenX is not part of NAI.

Apart from that as a publisher, I expect one ad code for my ad zone and the campaigns would be targeted using OpenX interface that suits my site audience but they don’t do it this way. They email each campaign ad codes to the publisher and publisher needs to rotate banners and campaigns. Yes you read it right. Even the banners of one campaign needs to be rotated by publishers. So if a campaign has five banners, they will email you all the five codes and you have to rotate them and see which one works better on your site. Something I would not prefer.

Horrible Payment Process

As far as I remember they had Net 90 as payment terms and though they have sent me an email asking for invoices for the month of October,

They actually missed my September payment.

Apart from that my understanding was they needed soft copy of the invoices but as per an email today I see that they need hard copy of the invoice.

Mostly CPL Campaigns

OpenX has very limited audience and geo targeting options they can only offer CPL or CPA type of campaigns to publishers and advertisers. The same thing is reflected on their websites

CPL campaigns rely too much on the third party implementation of tracking code. See the screenshot below where you can see I had very good conversion for ibibo campaigns but not as good conversions for other campaigns and this could be a tracking glitch as well. You never know.

Low CTR

I had very good conversion ratio which made my eCPM decent but the ads were not getting very good CTR. Comparing the same with Adsense at the same position and size has few times higher CTR.

Final Thoughts

If you are ready to take the pain of rotating your banners and campaigns, I think you can experiment with ibibo ads on your site for a month or two.

What is mGinger?

An Indian site for Indian audience, that pays you for SMS ads you receive on your mobile. You have to register on their site, and verify your mobile number. Based on your profile they send you daily SMSes and emails for which you get paid for.

How much mGinger pays?

The amount is very very low for you to earn any significant amount. The rates are 20 paise (USD 0.004) per SMS you receive. If you refer a friend you get paid Rs 2. Apart from that you also get paid a recurring 10 paise on 1st tier and 5 paise on 2nd tier for each SMSes your network receives.

Who Can Earn from MGinger?

Theoretically any Indian who has a bank account can earn from mGinger but practically no one can make anything significant through mGinger and so according to me it is a waste of time.

The minimum amount before you can request a check at mGinger is 300 Rs or (USD 6.5). My wife hardly uses the site and so she did not realized until last week that she has made more than Rs 300.

Why my wife made a Payable amount?

She has more than 1000+ people in her first level network and that is the secret to making a payable amount in mGinger. The reason she has so many referrals is because once upon a time I had an Indian site where I was using mGinger banner when I had no advertiser and that lead to lot of people signing up under her network.

Currently she has Do Not Disturb or DND activated on her mobile phone and so she doesn’t receive any SMSes but still manages to earn few paise daily because of a very large network. If you are looking to earn some amount of money with mGinger, you need to make few thousand referrals.

Final thoughts

Every Indian who has done a transaction in PayPal complains about their exchange rates. See for yourself how crappy the currency conversion and exchange rates in PayPal is?

Client sent me PayPal payment in GBP. When accepting the payment instead of converting the payment in USD, I preferred to keep the payment as GBP balance.

I had 163.17 GBP in my PayPal account. When converting GBP to USD, PayPal would give me 251.58 USD.

In currency converter form of PayPal 251.58 USD and 163.17 GBP does not give the same amount in Indian Rupees.

Withdrawing 251.58 USD

Withdrawing 163.17 GBP

Finally money was withdrawn without converting the GBP Balance to USD.

Final Thoughts

Avoid currency conversion in PayPal. It is the best way to get the most out of your PayPal Balance.

Customer Support

I sent in a support ticket and I saw a response in around 6 hours. Remember I am based in India and I sent the support ticket in the morning India time. The response was very detailed and answered all my queries.

Final Thoughts

In December 2010 when I reviewed Infolinks, VibrantMedia invited me to their network and after 4 months I had my first VibrantMedia Check in my hand.

So let me review VibrantMedia and compare it with Kontera with respect to InText Advertising (VibrantMedia even offers banner advertising). The benefit of using InText over other Ad methods always remains the same for both the networks.

Reporting

VibrantMedia lacks advance reporting. It just does not have any reporting information for impressions but only shows the aggregate clicks and revenue where as Infolinks have very detailed reporting of impressions clicks and Kontera reporting is one more step further. It even shows the keywords as well as URL’s of your site that drives maximum revenue.

Earnings

Though I could not compare VibrantMedia and Kontera based on CTR or eCPM I can assure that I am making 5 to 7 times more money from VibrantMedia than I was making for Kontera at the same traffic level and this data is not for a month or two but is based on 5 months data. Earnings for the month of April is 5.6 times more than for December I made with Kontera and my traffic level is higher by roughly 20% as per Google Analytics.

To add to it, Kontera had very unstable earnings like you can see below. One day it is up, next day it is almost zero.

Payments

I had a misconception earlier that VibrantMedia does not accept Non-US publishers but they not only accept international publishers but also supports PayPal as the payment method. They need to verify your address and so the first payment is in the form of a check. I also received second payment from VibrantMedia in PayPal.

Publisher Referral

As per the official Kontera blog for every publisher you refer to Kontera, you’ll get a referral bonus of 10% of their monthly net revenue. My Kontera Review is online since December 2009 and is ranked high in Google as well but I am yet to refer a single publisher. Sound’s very strange to me. Cannot say for sure if there has been any conversion but it is very unlikely that after thousands of clicks I have not referred a single publisher or advertiser.

Now for VibrantMedia they have a very lucrative referral program.

Ad Control

With Kontera you have to manually add a <div class=”KonaBody”> if you want to restrict Kontera to stop showing ads on some areas of your page like Navigation and other non-content area. Same goes to Infolinks as well but Vibrantmedia automatically detects content area of a page and display the ads only in content and not in the Navigational areas and other areas where you don’t want the ads to appear.

Final Thoughts

Your first choice should be VibrantMedia or Infolinks but definitely not Kontera.

Almost everyday I get emails like this.

And normally I just report them to Google and delete it but this weekend I just thought of going through one of the spam to see what those spammer’s offer. I visited the website infoonlineservices.com and saw a website where they offer those services.

Wanted to see how well they rank their own site and saw this on Google.

Pitty. In 8 years they could not get their own site rank on first page for their own company name.

I was just curious to know more about the history of 8 years and so went on to check Whois information for the domain and found that domain was created on 30th April 2010. 1 year and still they are actually not able to rank their own site. I really doubt the future of those 30 firms from US, UK, Australia and parts of Europe.

BuySellAds Marketplace is very active and many publishers makes thousands of $ per month.

3. Real time Analytics

Analytics for your inventory is almost real time and same also goes for advertiser interface.

4. Fast Loading Ads

The ads load asynchronously (See how to load your ads asynchronously here) and so it does not hinder the page loading time giving better user experience.

5. You decide pricing

I am not sure if this is an advantage or a disadvantage but I have included it as an advantage because it is an advantage for me. You can decide what pricing you want for an advertisement spot. The challenge is to get the right price for your ad space i.e. Not too high or else advertisers won’t pay and not too low or else you may be giving yourself a cheap deal. The pricing strategy that can work well is to start cheaper and increase the price over time.

6. No Minimum Payout

There are very few quality ad networks without a minimum payout. All you have to do is request your payment amount from your account balance and you get paid in few days.

7. 75% Revenue Share

You keep 75% of the total pricing which is much higher than other Ad networks like than Adsense and TribalFusion.

8. Not for Large Established Players

Lastly BuySellAds is not for well established websites that are not using BSA. I say this because if you have other better CPM networks you would never give BuySellAds a try. Even if I want I will not give them a try on Go4Expert because having a paid ad is always better than a non-paid Advertise Here ad of BSA. This can work in favor of new sites as you have lesser publisher competing for the advertiser’s money. Though there are large well established publisher as well who have pool of advertiser’s in BSA to fill there ad inventory.

Negatives

1. No Default Ads

If you don’t have any advertiser for your spot you are left with nothing but show Advertise Here. You cannot opt for a Default Ad from some other ad network.

2. No Referral Programs

Even if you refer an advertiser, BSA doesn’t pay you any referral fees. This actually means if you have no advertiser for your website or ad zone, you show the default Advertise Here ad which actually earns you nothing even if you refer an advertiser who purchases advertisement on some other related site or your competitor you loose.

3. Niche Marketplace

Market place is mainly targeted for tech, web design and development and freelancing niche. I tried BSA on MBAGuys and had very little success. You may end up getting nothing if you have no advertiser’s in your niche.

Final Thoughts

I think if you have a fairly new website (Remember unless you have 10,000 Page views per month BSA don’t rank you in search.) related to tech, web design niche it would be a wise decision to give BSA a try. Just make sure you have keywords tagged followed with a great description for listing in the directory and to maximize search hits.

IMTips.co is hosted on dedicated server by ThePlanet (See my Review for ThePlanet here) but the move I did was for my friend Yogin. His site is ManagementFunda.com where I am more of a tech guy.

Issue 1 – At times site becomes slow

Yogin always told me that he is experiencing site as slow quite often but when I checked I could not see anything like that but that may be because I don’t spend hours on his blog like he does. I even tried chatting with the tech support team but then you can never get the chat people understand what you mean by slow. They will always reply they could not replicate your problem.

Issue 2 – Bad control panel experience

Horrible control panel which is still a beta but their beta is not like other Beta you expect. Their control panel have their own File Manager where you cannot unzip a zipped file and for doing that you have to take some other path. I expect to upload a zip file using FTP and unzip using file manager. They have unzip option which is almost impossible to find. It is under some archive gateway.

Issue 3 – Horrible Support

Techy things like archive can be dealt with if you have good support but I just saw a horrible support. As always I will show you some horrible replies by the support team once again.

Site was down from 21st Jan, 2011. Once I saw my site down I started a chat and the person I talked with saw my site down and so he created a support ticket and you can see the details of the ticket here.

See the timing when I created the ticket and when it was resolved. On 21st Jan the issue started and it was resolved on 24th Jan 2011.

Now this is not all. The actual comedy happens in the next ticket which I created few hours after I reported the issue through chat.

You see in the first image that my site was down from 21st Jan 2011 and on 22nd Jan 2011 you see me creating a second support ticket and see the last response to the second ticket in the second image. They tell me that they cannot do anything because it is a WordPress site. Unless you opt to use any script supported by iPage (they don’t support any as far as I know) you should never be using them. BTW they provide WordPress and Joomla as a third party application and this is not what they mean by support.

The person responding Sonny Reyes acts like everything is working fine for my site and it is just my WordPress installation that has the issue. The tech team have no idea if php is working or not for my site and the person who is replying has signature as Technical Specialist. Sorry Sonny and nothing personal against you.

Once I got the message from iPage on 22nd I decided to dump iPage and started my search for other best shared hosting provider for WordPress. I wanted to go from my list of best hosts and once I saw BlueHost among the recommend hosts by WordPress.org itself, I moved to Bluehost.

Final thoughts

I don’t recommend iPage for WordPress (Read hosting) but use BlueHost instead for all your shared hosting needs.

I have been using Infolinks on my MBA Forum for quite sometime now and so let me share with you my views reviews and experience about Infolinks.

What is Infolinks?

Infolinks is CPC based contextual advertising network that offers In Text advertising also known as InLinks or ContentLinks. Ads are integrated within the content and so no additional space is required to display ads.

As always I start with the negatives and this time it will be no difference.

Negatives

1. Low Per Click Earnings – If you compare Infolinks with Adsense then Infolinks has a very low per click earnings. We are here comparing apples with oranges but when both of them are CPC based advertising networks comparison is inevitable.
2. Unrelated Ads – Time and again I see ads which are not close to keywords. On my MBA Forum I see ads related to cars for keyword MBA Projects.
   

Positives

1. Global Inventory – The best part of Infolinks is they have a very good Global Inventory. MBA Forum is mainly Indian centric and Infolinks works much better than Kontera. Kontera’s recent product Kontera Synapse – where they don’t show ads if they think user is not likely to click actually means they have lesser inventory to fill. My Kontera earnings decreased by almost 50% in past that product launch news and when I contacted them it was not very positive.
2. Adds to overall income without any banner space – Inline ads never take up any banner space and so you are never concerned about the placement and it adds well to the revenue. Intext links has never been a major source of income for me (See the break up here) but it adds to the final total. Apart from that I follow couple of rules for inline text advertising.
   1. I only show inline ads to guests and not to members. This gives me an added advantage to ask guests to register.
   2. I only show inline ads within the content and not everywhere in headers and footers. I find it very unprofessional and also on forums I make sure the ads only appear on the thread pages and not on home page or forum/sub-forum pages.
3. Innovative Products – Infolinks have been very innovative with new products and their latest product – Related Tags works really well. The only problem is they don’t have reports to judge how this product is working but increase in earnings after installing Related Tags suggests it is working.
4. Pays with PayPal & Payoneer – Infolinks supports PayPal but recent PayPal issues in India & they soon started supporting Payoneer prepaid debit card (More about Payoneer here). Payoneer is great for publishers in India who wants to keep their business out of PayPal.
5. Good CTR – I have seen far better CTR for Infolinks then in kontera. 5 to 7 times better in CTR than Kontera and this compensates very well for low per click value and brings the eCPM higher.
6. Works with Adsense – InText links not only are banner space independent but also works with Adsense TOS and apart from that I have not seen any decline in my Adsense CTR or earnings after using infolinks. Extra income is not bad at all.
7. Highest Revenue Share – Infolinks offers highest revenue share in the industry i.e 70%. It is even better than Adsense which is at 68% and many other in-text ad providers give only 40% to 50%.
8. Infolinks has Much Better Support than Kontera – When Indians had problems with PayPal, I was using Kontera as well as Infolinks and Infolinks reacted very early to email about the updates and steps they will take to solve the issues with PayPal refunds, where as Kontera did not even respond to the support tickets for 15 days and once I posted this on Facebook they looked into it.
   

Final Thoughts

I have been using Infolinks for couple of years now and yet I have very less negative points to share then positives. Apart from that I think Infolinks works better for majority of people because they have great CTR and world wide ad inventory and so if you still have not given them a try go Signup Now.
