In my post about 5 Most Common Blogging Mistakes to Avoid I mentioned why Blogspot and wordpress hosted blogs are not good but in brief and so here I would explain in much more details about the advantages and disadvantages of each of the option.
WordPress Blog as wordpress sub-domain
I do not see any advantage of having wordpress Blog on wordpress sub-domain but see many disadvantages. If you are blogging for making money this option is not at all for you.
- They do not allow you to execute any scripts which means you would not be able to put any advertisement on the blog apart from few affiliates advertising.
- You are not allowed to add the plugins you prefer but only from the list they have them in the interface.
- They do not allow editing of themes and also do not allow you to use custom theme.
Blogspot blog on Blogspot sub-domain
Having Blogspot blog overcomes disadvantages we have for wordpress Blog on wordpress sub-domain but then it comes with more and more disadvantages.
Many Ad networks require that you own the top level domains and not be on sub domain and so blogspot apart from adsense is not eleigible for any other advertising network for revenue. To add to the problem for new blogs one of the good money makers are links network like text-link-ads and linkworth who does not accept blogspot blogs on blogspot sub-domain.
Blogspot blog on self hosted domain
Now having a blogspot blog on your own domain is also possible and blogger has the interface to FTP the needed files to your server and works like any other site and so now this removes the disadvantages we faced in second option but then as a developer if you have to deal with lots of plain html files to manage can be a problem at times but if that is not considered then also we see lots of problems
- There are no good plugins in blogspot which can be used even if you host them on your own server.
- There are very few themes avaialble for you to use it.
- Comments are mainly handled by blogger and you do not have users database.
- Top bar cannot be taken out giving a look of blog all the time instead of CMS but wordpress can be used as CMS as well.
WordPress Blog on self hosted domain
This is probably one of the best blogging environment you can think of. Be it ease of use or from SEO point of view or from the point of view of the number of plugins and theme available for free I see no match. Apart from that it has all the needed stuff to make it look like a potential website and not just another blog.
Few of my favorite blogs like techcrunch & Mashable are even on wordpress platform.
I recommend BlueHost, hostgator and Godaddy, they offer for as less as $5 per month to start with. Checkout my experience and reviews of some of the Best Cheap Shared Hosting providers.
But if you are not planning to subscribe through Email. Try subscribing to RSS.

Dear Sir,
I have a jobs portal with some good article around 1000 nos. still i have only around 300 visitors a day. Sould i convert my site to wordpress ? how much cost it will take for me monthly with 1000 article ?
Is it posible to convert blogger blog to wordpress ? my site here – http://sarkari-hub.blogspot.in
Thanks
I don’t see any good articles on your blog and all you have is job opportunities which you if you call them as articles then I think you need to understand that those information are more of a time based information and so you may need lot more than 1000 to get anything substantial.
Apart from that yes blogger can be converted into Wordpress and there are plugins to get your blogger blog imported into Wordpress.
Hi Shabbir,
I have a blog on Banking Exams in India and the URL is http://allbankexam.blogspot.com/. Many times I have thought of moving it to a new domain of my own. But, I am afraid as this URL is very popular and will create many broken links one the URL changes.
How can I handle this. Please suggest. Also, please let me know the SEO impact.
Banshi, if you are planning to change the domain you can do that by making a permanent redirect from old to new URLs and this will make least possible impact.
Thanks Shabbir. Do you know any Tools for permanent redirect. Or any article that describes the process should be fine.
I am not sure how you want the redirect to be done but I personally always prefer Wordpress platform for blogs and if you also plan to do the same there are lot of plugins in Wordpress that can help you with the redirection. See http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/blogger-to-wordpress-redirection/
Update: Also found one more which even helps in SEO and links – http://devilsworkshop.org/moving-from-blogger-to-wordpress-maintaining-permalinks-traffic-seo/
I think Blogspot and Wordpress would have their merits especially when it comes to SEO and internet marketing. Wordpress seems much easier to customize but Blogspot has some advantages when it comes to monetizing the blog.
What advantages Blogspot has for monetization? Can you clarify please.

Blogger allow to map a top level domain bought from outside. let us say, you have a blog URL www. example.blogspot.com. Get a domain (such as http://www.example.com ) from any other company and map the same to this blog. Go to settings in the blogger and follow the instructions.
